“You brought a turkey”?

We were hiking over Swiftcurrent Pass to the Granite Park Chalet in Glacier National Park. We had planned on hiking in to the chalet on the Highline Trail from Logan’s Pass and out over Swiftcurrent to Many Glacier, but the Red Eagle Fire closed Going to the Sun on the east side.

Dinner at the chalet that night consisted of smoked turkey breast, stuffing, and green beans with garlic, to the chagrin of fellow hikers eating freeze dried, and to the delight of the chalet staff who ate all of the extras.

Pictures from the hike can be found right here.

Same trip, reverse route »

Here is a short trip report from late September, 2004, of the same trails as our permit, in reverse, and only 4 days: Grand Canyon 2004.

Small amount of water

This is the kind of water source we’ll be dealing with! Also note on the image of their permit the note that this is an “Excessively Dangerous Hike”, it looks like that little fact was neglected from our permit!

Plan on being Thirsty! »

Well, we got a permit. It was pretty much our second choice, well almost. We asked for Boulder (BH9) for our third night, the permit says Grapevine (BH9). Same?

We’ll need to do some investigation, and talk to the Rangers, about the water supply. Speaking of water, pay special attention to the note on the permit that the water will contain arsenic, but no worries, it shouldn’t kill you if you don’t consume it daily!

One more thing to note: the sun sets at 5:46pm in the canyon, not much time for backcountry bocce ball.

Grand Canyon Map »

Here is a Grand Canyon Map of the hike that we’re planning to Clear Creek, including the dayhikes up and down Clear Creek. It also goes in and out the two different trails that we’ll probably do, Bright Angel and Kaibab.

Depending on your browser, it might size the jpg file to fit on your screen which will be too small to see the detail. Save the image and then view it at a larger size to see everything.

Grand Canyon Calendar »

I’ve started a GCNP2007 Calendar so that we all know dates and other details. You can view the calendar here, or download a printable PDF from here. I’ll add details as they become available.
