At what point do we begin to adopt the popular Ultralight Backpacking style? I’m not talking about cutting the handles off of your toothbrush to save an ounce, but……..

Let’s consider my three most important pieces of gear, my backpack, my tent, and my sleeping bag:

Dana Glacier Backpack
- 5 lbs, 13 oz
Sierra Designs, Meteor Light 2 man tent
- 6 lb 10 oz
North Face, Blue Kazoo Long Sleeping Bag
- 3 lb 2 oz

Ok, what can I get that is “Ultralight” and comparable in size, temperature rating etc.?

GoLite Odyssey Pack
- 3 lb 8 oz, $200, 2 lb 5 oz savings
Tarptent Double Rainbow 2 man tent
- 2 lb 8 oz, $250, 4 lb 2 oz savings
GoLite F’Lite Feather Bag
- 1 lb 13 oz, $300, 1 lb 5 oz savings

So, is it worth $750 to save 7 lbs, 12 oz?
