Grand Canyon 2007 – Trip Route Map »

Here is the route map for our Grand Canyon 2007 backcountry trip. It was built using track files from my Etrex Vista gps. The breaks in the red lines are caused by the GPS losing satellite connectivity in some of the deep canyons. The squiggly lines and small circles between Horseshoe Mesa and Cave of the Domes were caused by us searching and backtracking for the side trail to the cave, we did find it! Back from the Grand Canyon »

We returned from our adventure in the Grand Canyon about 2 weeks ago. Everyone is busy organizing photos and videos, cleaning equipment etc. It was a great trip, which had a little bit of everything:

  • Cool weather, almost cold, warm weather, hot actually, solitude in the backcountry, pleasant company (and beer!) at Phantom Ranch, scorpions, route finding, some uphills, some downhills, dollar games, the challenge of finding water, Sierra Coolers, thieving Ravens, Tarantulas, a cave, a great waterfall, Bighorn Sheep, lizards (including one that didn’t make it), the full moon, bats, drinking games with dice, steep drop offs, a rattlesnake, wind wind wind, red dust covered sleeping bags, ribs at a cowboy steakhouse, and a night in Vegas to wrap it up.

More later.

Scorpions »

Read all about them here. The species that we have to worry about in the Grand Canyon is the Bark Scorpion.

The good news is that, if stung, “death is rare”.

The bad news is that a sting results in “severe pain (but rarely swelling [ more good news? (Len) ]) at the site of the sting, numbness, frothing at the mouth, difficulties in breathing (including respiratory paralysis), muscle twitching, and convulsions.”

Hmm, watch where you put your hands and be careful when walking around bare foot.

Supplies! »

Can we pick up some of this between Vegas and the Grand Canyon?

My Thoughts on London »

Hardys Pub

I only had a few hours by myself, but here are my initial thoughts on London:

  • Very interesting city
  • Helpful and friendly people
  • Extremely diverse
  • Surprised by the Smoke-Free laws for all pubs etc.
  • Large contrast between Canary Wharf business section and rest of city
  • World class public transportation
  • Confusing streets and directions. N, W, E, and W are almost meaningless
  • Good food!
  • Expensive! Everything costs twice as much as in America
  • Way too many men wearing pink shirts.
